Happy Thanksgiving to everyone....we had an amazing week with family and friends...

We made our way down to CT on Tuesday, and that was the only part of the holiday week that was awful, since, with traffic, it took us 6.5 hours to get to Ledyard! But we woke up Wednesday morning to have a great day. I went for a nice long run on some of the scenic roads in the Ledyard/Mystic area (Gallup hill rd, pumpkin hill red, etc). Anthony, Amanda, and I took all the kids (minus Annabella--she was at a daycare party) for a little hike at this nature center in Mystic (it has a wicked long American Indian name that I can neither pronounce nor spell). The hilight of Wednesday night was the 'dance party' where Jackson set up these red and green strobe light things and the kids all danced to "Use your love tonight" by the Outfield (Callum calls it the "Edelman song"), "Watch me nay-nay," or "Sorry" by Justin Beiber. To my everlasting shame I will admit that I like certain Beiber songs :/

On Thanksgiving morning Anthony and I made our way to the Mystic waterfront for the annual "Turkey Trot 5K." Over 700 people ran this race! I dont think that many people in Maine even exercise at ALL...haha....

We got back to the Favry household to see the kids all watching the parade and waiting for Santa. Dinner was awesome with a fried 24 pound turkey, bacon and corn casserole, creamed onions, sausage stuffing, and a million other things....Papa and Grammy G showed up first with two dozen HoneyDew donuts...then Anthony's mom Joanne came with a great apple pie, and then Nannie and Upbob arrived and we ate, drank, and were merry. Nannie brought some crafts to do with the kids, and Papa brought some green apple Crown Royal to drink--up to that point, I had never, in my life, had a drink with my dad. Crazy.

We left on Friday morning so we could get home in time for Callum to march in the Waterville ParadeOfLights parade with his cub scout pals...

Papa and Grammy G slept over at the Favry house on Thanksgiving night, which was really special. And then, on Friday night, MeeMee and Grampy came to the parade and slept over after--two consecutive sleepovers with different sets of grandparents! Unprecedented and a great and special time!!

And I have made it to my first school vacation of the year! Just like that! This year, we have the entire week off for Thanksgiving recess, so we kicked off this past weekend in style doing stuff with friends and family AND getting into the festive spirit of things. On Saturday morning, Amanda was out for a long run and Callum just asked on a whim if I could get some of the boxes of Christmas stuff down from the garage attic. Well, low and behold, one thing led to another, and two hours later the Goldsmith house was completely decorated for Christmas (minus the tree, of course). Hey,, why not, right?

On Saturday night we made our way down to LL Bean because everyone knows it is my favorite place in the whole world and I only wear their clothes and use their products! They had, one day before, done their big tree lighting ceremony, so we were there to see downtown Freeport decorated in all her LL Bean glory! The kids love the orchestrated light show that goes off every thirty minutes. It is pretty awesome, I have to say. So here are the kids, all excited for LL Bean Christmas stuff...

On Sunday after church we had an impromptu Hueser-Goldsmith party at our place...an afternoon of smoked bluefish dip (from fish Jake caught this past summer), clam chowder, baked mozzarella sticks, cranberry-orange pie, blondie bars, and lots more. Some air hockey was played, some BALTO (Maira's fave movie of late) was watched, some wrestling was done, and some wood-stove-was-gathered-around for a wonderful time with friends. The Huesers are headed out to their camp on Big Indian Pond for Thanksgiving....that is so awesome!

 

One more cool celebratory note: This past Friday was Callum's big "pack" meeting for all cubscouts (not just HIS den...). He and his buddy Oliver were called up in front of everyone and they were presented with their BOBCAT badges--his very first "earned" badge. Good job Callum! Now he is hard at work at his 'Tiger" badge. Below, his buddy Brock from down the street stands for a picture after the big pizza party...

And tomorrow (Tuesday) we leave to head down to Ledyard for Thanksgiving....looking forward to getting some quality time with my family...

Amanda heads the Board For Missions at church, and one of our biggest charities is the Maine Children's Home, which serves underprivileged, poverty stricken, and parentless kids in the central Maine region. On Tuesday afternoon, we all went over to the home to work on packing "Christmas gift boxes." It was a blast. We sorted through all the donations as each child receives a Christmas gift package containing: One large toy, one small toy, one board game, a coloring book with crayons/markers, one new outfit, one new set of pajamas, two books, and a set of winter hat/scarf/mittens. It is devastating to see how many children the Maine Children's Home has to serve...but it is wonderfully hopeful to see the outpouring of donations that come into the home each year. Callum and Maira got right into the spirit of the whole thing, picking out toys, games, and books for different kids on the lists. 

We were joined by some fantastic people from church, and afterwards we made our way over for a bite to eat at Mainely Brews. As a side note, this was a historic event in that it may have been the first time in our 15 year relationship that Amanda ordered an alcoholic drink and I did not...haha. As you can see, Maira continues to work her--shall we say-- 'charasmatic' expressions into every picture she's in....

Callum acted as Brian Watson's assistant and consultant, deciding what the 'in' toys and books would be for 6 and 7 year old boys...haha

 A couple of sidenote pieces of info: Two nights ago was the first night that I stoked the wood stove before going to bed...and this morning was the first morning that I stoked the stove before leaving for school. Tonight's run was one of the first 'cold' runs of the year, and the first run this year for which I wore pants, not shorts. A beautiful, cold, clear, half mooned night; as I ran I reminisced about Callum and Maira and how obsessed they used to be with seeing the moon in the sky when they were little. Especially Callum: The kid always LOVED the moon...he used to point it out wherever we were....

We inch closer and closer towards the holidays.....

This weekend was the famed "craft show" at the Augusta Civic Center--a fair featuring all handmade Maine crafts--and Callum, Lynne, and Amanda went to it. Callum is like a little old lady at these things--he totally eats it up and loves looking at crafts and buying Christmas gifts for others. For example, last year we got him a handmade 'keepsake box' with the PATRIOTS logo on it...it is one of his favorite things...

So Maira and I got to spend the day together, which was great! I start each Saturday off the same, with Maira helping me make coffee. Then I take my coffee out front or out on the back deck and just savor a cup, thanking God that another week of school is over (ha ha). Maira and I went out to breakfast at the Flatlanda', and we enjoyed pancakes, eggs, and bacon. My meal came with two pieces of bacon and two sausage patties...but Maira quickly took my bacon and added it to HER supply. The kid just loves bacon....

We came home and watched her favorite movie as of late: Balto. This is a cartoon story based on truth about a half wolf/half husky dog that is instrumental in leading a dogsled time from Nenanna Alaska to Nome Alaska during a Diphtheria out break in the early 1900s. Maira just loves it....

Then we took our own 'rescue dog' Orso for a little hike over at the Mill Island park in Fairfield; I have written of this place before I think...but it is actually ON an island in the Kennebec River. The park is about a mile away from us, and I go there with the kids sometime to play soccer, swing on swings, walk around, and get beautiful views of the river. Orso loves going for rides and he LOVES going on nature hikes. There are remnants of the old mill that inhabited the island many many years ago, and you can explore the foundation and other rock-walled parts of the old work zone. I think it was a woolen mill...but I will have to check. At any rate, here's a pic of a beautiful little girl and her loving dog. Boy does he put up with a lot of crap from her...a few days ago, he walked around for a few hours wearing barrettes that she put on him :/

Callum continues to be a star with his reading, and I love the initiative he is taking to go and read books 'on his own' with no help. He tried this a bit with Harry Potter....but he is working his way through complete JUnie B. Jones books with no problem. And, below, he is sitting reading DIARY OF A WIMPY KID which I think is a laugh out loud hilarious book....

Patriots just beat the Giants with a game ending field goal--the Pats stay unbeaten at 9-0. What is even more amazing than this is that we are nine weeks in to football season! Where does the time go!!!?? This will be a tough week at school--I am finding it difficult to get my seniors engaged and invested in school this year....vacation is coming up!!

Today was Veterans day, and we all had today off--a nice little break in the middle of the week. Today we also finished getting our wood ready for the winter--we stacked the rest of our green wood delivery, and we brought the rest of the already-seasoned stuff into the garage. So, in other words, the cold can get here any time it wants to! I cant wait.

With today being Veterans day and all, we took a ride into Augusta to go to Kohl's because Sally had some coupons or something like that....Maira and I walked around the store together, and all their Christmas stuff was on display....this, combined with our visit to Starbucks earlier today, really got me excited for the upcoming holidays....this is the year we travel to CT for Thanksgiving, and it is hard to believe that it is only about a week away!

The thing I look forward to the most about the holidays is all the family time--I love it when people come over to eat and celebrate for the holidays...having Lynne and George and Baba and Jon and Kelsey and all the NJ family over is wonderful...and Thanksgiving in CT is a rare and special time when I get to be with all of my side of the family at once--that doesnt happen very often.

Another great weekend has come and gone--we always try to live it up to the fullest on weekends, since week days and nights are so busy. On Friday, I took a bunch of WHS students on a tour of UMAINE (with some other faculty members) and I arrived home to see that Callum got his first report card!! The current 'liberal-cushy-system-du-jour' is absent of any As or Bs or Fs. Instead, the pinnacle to earn was an "O" for "Outstanding." Or you could earn a "VG" for "very good." Callum did  very very well on his report card, and we took him out to SweetFrog for a special report card treat...you will see a pic of the two kids down at the bottom of this post. 

Saturday was spent making/drinking amazing coffee with Maira (she helped with the making...not the drinking) and I always sit outside and have my first cup of the weekend. I wonder if, even when we are buried under snow and it is freezing, if I will go drink it outside. I think I will just for ceremonial purposes...haha. Maira and I also hit-up Hillmans for some amazing donuts. More firewood was stacked (we still have a bunch to do) and we took Orso for a 'byebyeride' just down the road to the Kennebec RailTrail for a beautiful gray-fall-day hike over some bridges, through some meadows, and by some riverbanks. It was a little too warm for my taste yesterday...probably even upwards of sixty!! Gross!! Currently, it is 9pm and 39 degrees. So I guess that is SOMEWHAT of an improvements! I cant wait for the cold weather!!!

Maira's favorite SweetFrog flavors are 'cupcake batter,' regular chocolate, and 'cotton candy.' Callum is strictly a 'cottoncandy' yogurt fan. Oh, and then they dumped gummy frogs, m&ms, sprinkles, and more on their fantastic concoctions....

So we are, tonight, half way through the NFL season....isnt that crazy? I know this to be true because the first half of the season's games are on regular tv...and the second half are on JUST NFL Network...and tonight that #elitistcable sham begins....

Maira spends most of her waking hours lately being either "Bella," a five year friendly talking jaguar....or, more recently, "Shooting Star," who is a friendly talking snow leopard who loves to play and can run SUPER fast. She really gets serious about getting into character...she crawls around the house on all fours...meows....jumps up and sits with you (like a cat) on the couch....and carries toys and other items around via her mouth....

Tonight was a 'family preschool dinner' put on by Maira's preschool at Fairfield Primary School--delicious baked beans, chicken chili, mac and cheese, and salad...it was great to see Maira 'in her element' playing with her 'girlfriends.' I love how little girls hold hands all the time when they are together. And, while I am at it, I have been super impressed and in love with how Callum and his guy friends (as well as girl friends) all hug each other when they see each other...it is beautiful and refreshing to see this...also, it is hilarious how Callum and Stephen will hug each other when they see each other...and then proceed to wrestle the heck out of each other and play, as Callum calls it, "tackle frenzy.' And, finally, Wednesday was definitely "Fire Station Day" for the Goldsmith kids. Maira's school took a field trip to Fairfield's Finest on Wednesday, and, later that evening, Callum's TigerScoutDen took a trip to the station as well...they got a full tour of the place; they got to sit and 'drive' the trucks, and it was a wonderful world...oh to have the innocence of a seven and four year old

So I really love pipe organ music--it is definitely my favorite type of music, in fact. Fairfield is home to a very old campus called "Goodwill-Hinkley" and it was, in olden days, a communal school and now it is partially owned by Kennebec Community College. At any rate, there is a chapel there called "The Moody Chapel" and it is home to quite an exquisite pipe organ. I took a picture of all the specs, etc, but I cannot find it. Rick Dostie, the organist at our church, played a recital there last week, and it was just amazing: The resonance and clarity of the organ is miraculous. The school year is already one quarter over...can you believe it? The kids are very involved with their activities: Maira does dance on Fridays and swimming lessons on Mondays. Callum was playing flag football on Tuesdays, he has swimming lessons on Mondays, and, on Wednesdays, he has cub scouts. So far he is really loving being a Tiger Scout, and he has earned his first badge (bobcat) by memorizing the code and the creed and doing all kinds of other cute things. Some of his buddies from class are in his 'den' and this Wednesday we are meeting at the Fairfield fire station to tour around!

The kids love their friends, and they are making them in droves at school, childcare, lessons, etc. Now that Callum is getting a little older he is becoming aware of all the other boys who live on our road (or roads just around the corner, etc). We are giving him more freedom to go ride to his friends' homes, and, as well, they come knocking on our door. His friend Stephen is in his class this year, and he lives around the corner from us. His brother Brayden (third grade) usually comes by with him as well. They do legos and 'try' to wrestle (but I dont let them....too dangerous...ohmystars...) and play games like Hungry Hippos and Headbandz

So there we are. Moving along with lightning speed through the school year. I cant believe we are already into November. I have been feeling pretty well, although I definitely struggle with the transition of the seasons. And my eyes, suddenly, seem to be failing me! I have been having a lot of trouble seeing at night especially--not only when I drive, but also when I run--my depth perception is way off and I have trouble with shadows and glare...haha...guess I am getting old. I go to the eye doctor in a couple of weeks.....
